about

Live at the Rock Oyster Festival is an album recorded at a festival in north Cornwall, UK. Apart from the last track, it is an all acoustic sound album with the use of didgeridoos, 2 stomp boxes, slide didge, djembes and other percussive sounds, all played live by John Thorpe. On most of the album he uses one of his best sticks made by Jesse lethbridge.
The first track Rock Oyster, named after the festival, is slow beat but quite dancey to kick off the set. Belly Dance is a more ambient track, accompanied by the interesting Belly Dancer, Yasmin Astera. Like the rest of the album, Tongue in Cheek is upbeat and lively; here he creates a staccato effect with some intricate didgeridoo tonguing and vocals. On various tracks John uses his two stomp boxes to create both the bass drum beat and the hi hat sound. On Electric Feet he uses both stomps to create a mesmerizing electronic beat and bass drum sound along with didgeridoo and maracas. The album is a multi-tasking, kaleidoscopic array of didgeridoo and percussion – the sound of ancient Earth in a one man band.
